Music Therapy is the use of music in the accomplishment of therapeutic aims: the restoration, maintenance, and improvement of mental and physical health. Music therapists work with individuals of all ages who require special services because of behavioral, social, learning, or physical needs.
What Happens in Music Therapy?
Singing can: address areas of speech such as articulation, rhythm, and breath control; assist memory recall; provide sequencing or steps through lyrics to learn new tasks or recover language.
Playing instruments can: aid in improving gross and fine motor skills; develop impluse control while playing in a group setting; increase self-esteem and self-discipline; provide a safe outlet for emotional expression.
Movement to music can: maintain and improve range of motion, mobility, strength, balance, coordination, and gait while providing motivation, interest, and enjoyment; prime the neurological system/pathways to allow increased cognitive processing and speech abilities.
Listening to music can: promote relaxation; provide musical cues; broaden creative thinking skills; address attention-to-task and general listening skills.
(These examples are provided only as brief and general ideas of how music therapy may be used to address different areas.)
Can Anyone Provide Music Therapy?
While everyone may use music therapeutically, music therapy services may only be provided by a professionally trained music therapist. Training includes graduation from an accredited institution with a bachelor's degree in music therapy, completion of a 6-month internship, and nationally recognized certification by the Certification Board for Music Therapy.
